The Hungarian Uprising is a memorable event of Hungarian history, a revolution against the Soviet rule over the country, fighting for freedom.

The revolt began on 23rd October with a student protest on the streets but what started as a peaceful demonstration soon turned into violent when armed soldiers fired into the crowd and this event only edged on the Hungarians to take stand. The government soon collapsed.

On 28th October, the prime minister, Imre Nagy, formed a new government and established a new, democratic regime with free elections. However, Soviet forces had advantage in numbers and invaded Budapest, forcing the members of resistance onto their knees by 10th November. But it took them almost 3 months to completely stop oppositions and strengthen their influence over the country again.

When Hungary eventually became a democratic republic in 1989, 23rd October was declared as public holiday to remember the heroes of revolution.
