Hungarian101: how to say you're learning Hungarian

Yasir Tanulni Magyar, can it get better?

In Hungarian there are no separate words for study and learn but depending on what you're learning/studying e.g. a subject, a language, an activity, there are several ways to say it.

Tanulni is the verb to say to learn/to study.

If you use it in first person, you conjugate it as tanulok, if third person, then tanul, hence the title of the blog!

So what do you study?

  • a language: Magyarul tanulok. - I learn Hungarian.* LANGUAGE + ul tanul(ok) - learn LANGUAGE

  • a subject or somethings, so nouns: Szavakat tanulok. - I'm learning words (as in vocabulary) szó = word, -k = plural form, -t = object marker

  • an activity, so verbs: Főzni tanulok. - I'm learning how to cook. főzni = dictionary form of to cook

Note: you can say magyart tanulok (with the object market we've already covered), but it rather means studying Hungarian. So with languages, when you want to say you learn one, it's better to use the -ul form. But if you're doing your Hungarian vocab practice or language homework then you can say the -t form. So the title Yasir Tanulni Magyar isn't quite correct, you should say instead: Yasir magyarul tanul.

After this, saying you're studying if somebody asks what you're doing is easy as pie! Why? Because just scream back them: TANULOK! (= I'm studying.)
