Hungarian101: how to wish happy holidays

Merry Christmas, happy holidays and so on... Merry times are coming around!

Since the Christmas holiday season is coming up, it's useful to know what to say to your Hungarian friends during this times.

  • Boldog karácsonyt (kívánok)! - Merry Christmas! boldog = happy, merry, joyful karácsony = Christmas -t = object marker kívánok = I wish

  • B.U.É.K = Boldog Új Évet Kívánok! - Happy new year! új = new év = year -et = object marker

  • Kellemes ünnepeket! - Happy holidays! kellemes = pleasant ünnep = holiday -ek = plural marker

  • Boldog születésnapot/szülinapot (kívánok)! - Happy birthday! nap = day születésnap = birthday -ot = object marker

  • Boldog névnapot! - Happy name day! névnap = (yes, Hungarians celebrate that)

  • Boldog évfordulót! - Happy anniversary! év = year forduló = turning point évforduló = anniversary

  • Gratulálok!/Gratula!/Grat! - Congratulations!/Congrats!
